The Guilford College men's basketball team welcomed the Shenandoah University Hornets for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference battle. A late run in the second half proved vital as the Quakers were victorious, 79-53.
Out of the locker rooms, Guilford (10-3, 6-0) was ahead by seven (36-29).
Liam Ward extended the lead to 12 with a layup and then a three-point shot. Shenandoah (3-12, 2-4) chipped away and cut the deficit in half (45-39) at the 14:51 mark.
The Quakers then locked in and held the Hornets to just seven points over the next nine minutes while GC scored 25 to advance its lead to 24 (70-46). Guilford went on to win by 26 points.
Ward led all scorers with 22 points while adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Tyler Dearman also finished with 20-plus points (21).
The first half was a different story compared to the second. The half started with the Quakers and
Jorden Davis scoring the first four points. Shenandoah responded with back-to-back threes to take a two-point edge (6-4).
Both squads traded the lead over the next 10 minutes until Guilford rattled off nine-straight to go ahead 27-19 with 27-19 with 6:51 remaining in the opening half. The Hornets tried to cut the deficit but were only able to pull within five. The Quakers went on to lead 36-29 as the horn sounded.
Davis contributed 14 points as
Julius Burch scored 10 points with seven rebounds and five steals. GC out rebounded SU 36-28 and scored 32 points off turnovers compared to eight for the visitors.
Guilford hits the road on Tuesday, January 25 to face Hampden-Sydney. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
