Guilford Takes Down Greensboro for Gate City Soup Bowl Win

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Guilford College football team claimed its first win of the season, as it took down Greensboro College, 21-7, in Saturday's Gate City Soup Bowl Game, earning the right to retain the associated trophy.

The Gate City Soup Bowl is a traditional matchup between the two Greensboro, N.C. schools in which they host canned food drives on campus, competing to see who can collect the most canned goods. The friendly competition all comes to fruition on a Saturday, when the two school's football teams face off.

Guilford was able to collect 15,000-plus non-perishable food items to be distributed to the Second Harvest Food Pantry and the Quaker Cupboard.

A ridiculously fast 3 play drive by Greensboro to open the contest resulted in a 15-yard touchdown for Zach Atkinson. The Pride's Zach Allman was able to put it between the uprights to make the score 7-0 with 13:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Quakers were unable to find the back of the endzone in the first stanza, but did post scores in the last three.

It was senior Tre Alexander with a 40-yard touchdown who put Guilford on the board at 6:29 in the second quarter. His tally capped off a 3-play, 48 yard drive.

Classmate Edrick Purnell followed his lead, posting a third quarter tally of his own. Purnell's score at 4:10 was the culmination of a 3-minute, six play drive.

Sophomore Jaden James made his presence known in the third and fourth quarters, recording not one, but two interceptions.

The last touchdown for Guilford was scored by Cameron Hutchinson, scored on a two-yard run with 7:08 remaining on the clock.

One thing remained the same on all of these scores, and that is Burke Nettles kicking good extra-point attempts.

Quarterback Teddy Gassert threw for 147 yards, going 10-for-27 on completions. He also rushed for 14 yards.

Besides James putting on a defensive showcase, Milad Aghaipour, Perry Tingen and Da'Juan Lockhart each put up four tackles.

Guilford College will return to action Saturday as it travels to Methodist for an 6 p.m. matchup.
