NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team handed Guilford its third straight loss on Thursday with a 7-0 victory in ODAC action in Norfolk.
The Marlins (6-4, 5-1 ODAC) established an early 3-0 lead by sweeping through doubles action. Shannon Lewes and Sophia Bibbo posted an 8-1 win in No. 3 doubles, defeating Nya Reed and Alys Parker. That was followed by an 8-2 victory in No. 1 singles by the pair of Alexa Brewster and Audrey Bally, who downed Madyson Schreiber and Hannah Pardue. The final doubles win came from the No. 2 pairing of Christine Zalameda and Anna Rogers, who came through with an 8-3 victory against Hannah Arnett and Bea Niybizi.
Virginia Wesleyan stretched its lead to 4-0 when fourth-seeded Shannon Lewes posted a win over Niyibizi. Bally added the fifth point for the Marlins when the No. 3 seed earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Arnett.
With the match decided, Amanda Stegemann defeated fellow No. 5 seed Nya Reed by scores of 6-3, 6-1 for the sixth Virginia Wesleyan point. The final point came from Bibbo, who claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jessica Fuentes in No. 6 singles play.
The final two matches were unfinished due to rain showers that passed through the area.
