GC Closes out Home Games in Loss to E&H

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Guilford College football team closed out its 2021 homeslate in a 66-13 loss to Emory & Henry, who is in its provisional period of its elevation to the NCAA Division II ranks.

THE BASICS

  • Scores: Emory & Henry 66, Guilford 13

  • Records: Emory & Henry 5-4, Guilford 1-7

  • Location: Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Prior to the contest a brief ceremony was held to honor the squad's 16 seniors; Tre Alexander, Philip Anderson, Anthony Barnes Jr., Brad Clarke, Bryan Dodson, Parker Jackson, Jordan Johnson, DJ Kirkland, Alex Manley, Larry McCormick, Derrien Phillips, Edrick Purnell, Ben Siegel, Brooks Stemple, Tyler Walker and Carter Wickey. They also honored their team manager, Katey Griswold.

  • The visitors were able to amass a 52-0 advantage through the first two quarters.

  • Guilford put up two great defensive plays in the first half, one in each quarter.

    • It was a Trey Buie breakup in the endzone, near interception, on 3rd and 8 that forced a field goal, which was better than the alternative.

    • Quarter two was highlighted by a James Pegues tackle for a loss to make it 2nd and 12 with 2:01 remaining in the stanza.

  • The Quakers first earned first down with 2:49 remaining on the clock as Paulie Menegay put up six yards on two rushes to move the chains.

    • Also impressive on the drive, Derrien Phillips put up a five yard run on his second snap of the day.

  • Despite the Wasps receiving the ball to open the second half, the Quakers were able to stimi their attempts, rewarded with a missed field goal by the opposition.

  • It was Phillips on 2nd and 7 at the Guilford 28 who posted Guilford's first score of the day. The Hickory, N.C. native faked a handoff and ran for a 72 yard score. Burke Nettles' point after try was good to make it 52-7 with 8:21 left on the clock.

  • The third frame was all-in-all a positive one for the hosts, as the scoring was balanced, 7-7.

  • GC scored on the opening drive of the fourth quarter as it drove down the field on 20 yards from Caleb Gibson, 13 from Phillips, with Joseph Brown recording the score on a 5 yard rush.

  • Guilford's defense was rewarded for its efforts as they forced Emory & Henry's first turnover on downs of the day, with 40 seconds remaining in the contest.
