ROANOKE, Va. – Host Hollins University took advantage of an undermanned Guilford College team in Friday's 7-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's tennis victory. The Quakers (1-5, 0-3 ODAC) took just five contestants to the match due to illness and another scheduling conflict.
Hollins claimed all three doubles points, one by forfeit. Jhovanna Salmeron teamed with Htet Myat San for an 8-4 victory over the Quakers' Katie Claggett and Alex Giddens at first doubles. Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Snoddy pulled out an 8-5 triumph over Guilford's Nora Prokosch and Chandler MacDonald at second doubles.
Claggett shutout Salmeron, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles and Prokosch delivered a 6-4, 6-1, win over Oliva Dannon at second singles, but Hollins won the remaining four matches in straight sets, including the sixth-singles match by forfeit.
Verkerk downed MacDonald, 6-3, 6-1, at third singles. San took down Giddens, 6-0, 6-0, at fourth singles. Kateri Johnson knocked off Guilford's Maureen Smith by the same score.
Coach Dave McCain's Quakers host league rivals Randolph-Macon College Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on the McMichael Centennial Class Courts.
