GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College claimed a 6-3 women's tennis win over visiting Sweet Briar College Sunday at the McMichael Centennial Class Courts. The Quakers improved to 6-6 with the win. Sweet Briar slipped to 6-8.
The Quakers opened the contest by sweeping the three doubles matches. The tandem of Katie Claggett and Riley Caruana pulled out a narrow 8-6 win over the Vixens' A.J. Lukanuski and Gina Rutledge. Guilford's Fernanda Gonzalez and Leigh Fishman stopped Anna Colvin and Samantha Yew, 8-3. The Quakers' Nora Prokosch and Luci Gordon defeated Madi Mills and Des'rae Davis, 8-4.
Gonzalez and Fishman also won their singles matches. Gonzalez shut out Mills at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0. Fishman downed Katie Craig, 6-1, 6-2. Riley Caruana won at third singles over Yew, 6-1, 6-2.
Sweet Briar pulled out a pair of three-set wins at first and second singles. Lukanuski edged Claggett, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-8) at first singles. Rutledge pulled out a 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over Prokosch at second singles.
Coach Dave McCain's Quakers visit Bridgewater Friday (4/13) in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference finale rescheduled from March.
