BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Carter MacLeod's goal with 10 minutes left in regulation gave visiting Guilford College a 13-12 women's lacrosse win at Bridgewater College Sunday in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener.
MacLeod's score capped a quick 3-0 Guilford (3-4, 1-0 ODAC) run that erased a 12-10 deficit, the largest for either team. Summer Fowler, who scored a career- and game-high six points, started the run with her third and final goal on a free-position shot with 11:29 remaining. Marina Bailey followed suit 22 seconds later to tie the game at 12. The Eagles (4-3, 0-1 ODAC) won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over back to Guilford, which cleared it and took the lead when Fowler fed MacLeod for the sophomore's only score of the game.
Both teams had scoring chances in the final minutes, including two potential game-tying shots in the final 32 seconds by Bridgewater. Caroline Fletcher sent a free-position effort wide with 32 ticks left, but Bridgewater retained possession and Claire Palermo-Re fired six seconds later only to hit the crossbar.
In addition to her game-high three goals and three assists, Fowler also caused a game-best six turnovers and recovered two ground balls. Marina Bailey also scored three times for the Quakers, who held a 32-24 shots advantage. Amanda Dionne contributed two goals and an assist, plus three draw controls. Demming Carlow also scored twice for Guilford. Sammi Milbourn stopped seven shots in goal, including five in the opening half.
Kristen Stark led the Eagles' offense with three goals. Jenna Devilbiss had two goals and an assist, plus three draws, but left the game with 4:29 remaining due to a second yellow card. Annie Sullivan and Sarah Yashinskie also scored twice. Netminder Rachel Gruber stood tall in goal with 15 saves and three ground balls.
