Hewitt Wins at First Singles in Guilford Tennis Triumph Over Lynchburg

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Allison Hewitt made an emergency move up to the first-singles flight and delivered a three-set win in Guilford College's 7-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tennis triumph over visiting Lynchburg College Saturday.

Hewitt, who had played every singles flight save number-one before today, pulled out a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over the Hornets' Melissa Drinkard. She was forced into the top spot following an injury to Guilford's regular top-singles player, Haley Andrews. Andrews was hurt earlier when she and Hewitt teamed for an 8-4 win over Lynchburg's Drinkard and Betsy Stipa.

Andrews' injury sent ripples through the rest of the Quakers' lineup, but Guilford had the benefit of winning all three doubles matches. Fernanda Gonzalez climbed into the second-singles flight where she fell to Stipa, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1, after suffering a broken racquet string. Madison Giles stayed in the third-singles slot for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Carter Vaughn. Freshman Nora Prokosch pulled out a three-set win at fourth singles, one higher than usual, with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-2 triumph over Madison Dixon. Forest Melcher took the fifth-singles contest, 6-4, 6-1 over Hailey Bettencourt.

Kelsey Krisik scored the Hornets (0-2, 0-2 ODAC) second point with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) win over Guilford's Mara Stern in the sixth-singles match.

The Quakers face NCAA Division II member Pfeiffer University on the road Sunday (3/2) at 1:00 p.m. in their third match in as many days.
