Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. – Matt McCarthy scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half of Guilford College's 77-63 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Eastern Mennonite University Saturday. Sophomore Zeb Richardson matched his career high with 17 points in the Quakers' (13-4, 7-1 ODAC) fourth win in five games.
McCarthy connected on three of his game-high four three-pointers in the second half. Eastern Mennonite (9-8, 4-4 ODAC) cut a four-point halftime deficit to two four minutes into the second half before five McCarthy points sparked a 9-2 Guilford burst. His three-pointer with 4:49 remaining opened a 69-57 lead and effectively put the game out of reach. The Quakers built the final margin by making all six free-throw attempts in the final 1:42.
Richardson tallied 11 first-half points, which helped Guilford open a 36-32 halftime lead. Rookie Alston Furr scored 12 of his 14 points in the opening frame. Jake Hopkins chipped in with eight points and shared team-high rebounding honors with rookie Robbie Stokely. Both Quakers snared seven rebounds. Freshman Josh Spainhour dished out a game-high five assists.
David Falk, one of NCAA Division III's top rebounders, paced the Royals with 17 points, 15 boards and three blocks. Marcel Crump added 14 points and four assists. Eastern Mennonite made just four of 25 three-point attempts (16%) and shot less than 38 percent from the floor overall.
