Guilford Falls to #15 Washington and Lee, 19-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Emmy Mathews scored four goals and an assist in visiting Washington and Lee University's 19-6 lacrosse win at Guilford College Wednesday. Ranked 15th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association NCAA Division III Poll, the Generals maintained their perfect ODAC record (7-0) and improved to 10-4 overall.

After Guilford's E'leyna Garcia scored the game's first goal, Washington and Lee reeled off 10 of the game's next 11 scores. Seven different Generals scored in the first half to give the guests a 7-2 halftime lead.

Wilton Megargel opened the second half with her second of three goals on the day and Washington and Lee picked up where it left off in the first frame. Kate Speare's free-position goal with 24:35 left in the game opened an 11-3 Generals' lead and triggered a 9-1 spurt by the visitors. Mathews closed the run with consecutive goals that made the score 18-4 in favor of the Generals.

Ten different Generals ended up with goals, including Megargel and Alli Shearin, who both scored three times. Alex Van Horn, who contributed two goals and an assist, shared team-high honors with Mathews with four draw controls. Washington and Lee won 15 draws and outshot the Quakers, 36-17.

Garcia scored five of Guilford's six goals. Summer Frazier picked up a game-high seven draw controls and Liza Mettler made 10 stops and five ground balls in goal.

The Quakers return to action Saturday at league-rival Randolph College.
