Quakers Fall to Denison, 20-7, in Women's Lacrosse

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Molly Sbrega scored five goals to lead Denison University to a 20-7 lacrosse win at Guilford College in the Big Red's season opener. Sbrega scored four times in the second half, which saw Denison break open a four-goal game with a 10-1 run.

Nine different Denison (1-0) students scored in the match. Jenny Strathern and Katherine Palms both tallied three times and had an assist. Alex Thurner also netted three goals. Molly Cornbrooks added one goal, two assists and a team-high four ground balls. Her first-half tally capped a 5-0 Big Red run that helped Denison to an 8-4 halftime edge.

Denison took advantage of 45 Guilford (0-3) fouls in the match and scored on seven-of-11 free-position opportunities. Sbrega, Palms and Thurner all went two-for-two on free-position chances. The Big Red enjoyed a 39-15 shots advantage.

Guilford's Summer Frazier, who scored a career-high six goals in last year's home win over Denison, was held to one goal and one assist in today's contest. E'Leyna Garcia also had a goal and an assist for Guilford. Quakers' goalie Liza Mettler made 11 saves in goal and teammate Katie Oliver picked up a game-high six ground balls.

Guilford entertains Berry College Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
