Guilford Shuts Down Randolph-Macon, 66-53

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Will Freeman and Josh Pittman both scored 16 points in Guilford College's 66-53 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Randolph-Macon College Saturday afternoon.

Freeman hit for 14 points and Pittman added 10 in a decisive first half that saw the Quakers (7-2, 2-1 ODAC) open a 41-27 halftime lead. Guilford made better than 65 percent of its shots and held the Yellow Jackets (6-3, 2-2 ODAC) to 37 percent shooting. The Quakers' Gabriel Lowder scored all five of his points in a key stretch late in the second half that saw Guilford build a three-point edge into an 11-point advantage.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the second half. Randolph-Macon limited Guilford to less than 26 percent shooting from the floor. Freeman and Pittman combined for eight second-half points after totaling 26 points together in the first half. Connor Sullivan's free throw capped a 7-0 Randolph-Macon run that drew the Yellow Jackets to within 56-50 with 5:22 remaining. Guilford answered with strong defense of its own and held Randolph-Macon to a Jamie Robinson three-pointer in the final five minutes and closed the game on a 10-3 run.

Robinson paced the Yellow Jackets with 14 points off the bench. Senior Adam Desgain added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, but shot just five-of-12 from the floor. Randolph-Macon's leading scorer, sophomore Andre Simon, managed two points in 23 minutes off the bench, 12 below his season average.

Guilford's Carson Sullivan contributed nine points, six boards and an assist in his first college matchup against his brother, Connor. Brad Monroe chipped in eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 points. The Quakers held Randolph-Macon to 34.5 percent shooting from the floor and held a 44-35 rebounding advantage.

The Quakers host Maryville (Tenn.) College next Saturday (12/17) at 3:00 p.m. in a nonconference game.
