Comeback Stalls in ODAC Tourney Loss at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. - Erin Clare Cassidy scored two of her team-high three goals in the first half to lift Randolph-Macon College past visiting Guilford College, 11-8, Wednesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinal.

The third-seeded Yellow Jackets (9-6) advance to Saturday's semifinals to play number-two Washington and Lee University at top-seeded Roanoke College. The Quakers end their season with a 6-11 overall record.

Randolph-Macon scored seven of the game's first eight goals en route to a 7-3 halftime lead. Laura Fox and Amanda Rzucidlo scored 30 seconds apart in the first four minutes of the game. With the Yellow Jackets holding a 4-1 lead, Cassidy's second goal of the game triggered a 3-0 burst over the next 25 seconds for a 7-1 edge. Carrie Ernst and Hannah Merrell scored in the half's final minute to make it a 7-3 game at intermission.

The Quakers scored three of the first four goals of the second half to draw within 8-6 with 22:42 left to play, but Randolph-Macon reeled off the next three scores to restore a five-goal cushion with 17:16 remaining. Ernst netted her game-best fourth goal of the game followed by a Shelly Nogueira tally, which provided the final margin. Neither team scored in the final 13:58 during which time Alyzza May-Callahan made four of her game-high 14 saves to help Guilford stay within three goals.

Fox finished with two goals for the Yellow Jackets, who had eight different goal scorers. Emily Kent and Morgan Hutchinson both contributed a goal and an assist. Logan Pomeroy had a goal and picked up a game-high six draw controls, which helped the hosts to a 13-7 edge in the category. Goalie Alex Flammia made five saves and picked up a team-best five ground balls.

Ernst's four goals paced the Quakers. Nogueira and Merrell both scored twice and Nogueira had two assists.
