Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/7/09) - Clay Henson scored 20 points and Rhett Bonner added 18 in Guilford College's 75-61 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Washington and Lee University Saturday. The Quakers (17-4, 10-2 ODAC) finished the game on a 17-2 run to win for the 13th time in 15 games.
The Generals (12-8, 5-6 ODAC) suffered their fourth straight loss despite leading for most of the game. Washington and Lee even withstood an 11-0 Guilford run midway through the second half and took a 59-58 edge on Jason Cimino's jumper with 5:39 left in the game. The basket proved the visitors' final field goal and three different Generals missed front ends of one-and-one free-throw opportunities down the stretch.
Bonner answered Cimino's jumper with a three-pointer at the 5:10 mark, which changed the lead for the eighth and final time. The junior's third trifecta of the game gave Guilford a 61-59 edge and triggered an 11-0 Quakers' spurt over the next 4:13. Bonner had seven points during Guilford's game-ending 17-2 run.
Guilford shot just under 61 percent (14-23) from the floor in the second half and made all 17 second-half free throws. The Quakers connected on three-of-four field goals and six free throws in the final 3:31. Junior center Tyler Sanborn had six points and five of his game-high eight rebounds during that time.
Washington and Lee frustrated Guilford into 36 percent field-goal shooting and eight turnovers in the first half. The Generals built an 11-point lead late in the period before Guilford made it a 35-29 game at the break. Chris McHugh scored seven of his team-high 10 points in the opening period. Rookie Ben Goetsch also finished with 10 for Washington and Lee, which had 14 offensive rebounds leading to 21 points. Rookie Kyle Bond added five points and a team-high seven boards off the bench.
Guilford's Sanborn finished with 13 points and two blocks and George Neville had a strong game in the post with 14 points. The Quakers scored 22 points off of 15 Generals' turnovers.
Guilford returns to action Wednesday (2/11) night at league-rival Eastern Mennonite University. Washington and Lee plays at Randolph-Macon College Monday (2/9) in a 7:00 p.m. ODAC tilt.
