Ernst's Goal Lifts Guilford Past Greensboro, 16-15

GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/21/09) - Carrie Ernst's goal with 5:32 left in the game gave Guilford College a 16-15 win over visiting Greensboro College Saturday afternoon. Ernst was one of four Quakers (1-1) to score three times in Guilford's fifth straight win over the Pride (0-1).

Greensboro overcame a 9-5 first-half deficit and trailed 10-8 at halftime. The Pride's Toni Battaglia and Jackie Farrell opened the second-half scoring with back-to-back goals, which tied the score at 10-10. The teams traded goals before Greensboro's Layne Woodard and Battaglia netted consecutive scores 1:43 apart to give the Pride its first lead of the game with 8:11 left in the game.

Guilford's Ellie Merritt's free-position goal tied the score for the fifth and final time at 15-15 with 6:53 left. The Quakers' Hannah Merrell won the ensuing draw control, which led to Ernst's (left) game-winner.

Greensboro won the next draw and got off two shots on goal, but Guilford goalie Alyzza-May Callahan made two stops in the final five minutes to preserve the win.

Battaglia led all scorers with seven goals and also had a game high with six ground balls. Woodard contributed two goals and an assist for Greensboro.

In addition to Ernst, Merritt, Shelly Nogueira and Sarah Bradburd all scored three times for Guilford. Jennifer Abelin had five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Quakers. Callahan finished with 15 saves.
