Henson Shoots Guilford Past Eastern Mennonite, 82-71

HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/11/09) - Clay Henson scored a game-high 25 points and Rhett Bonner added 15 in visiting Guilford College's 82-71 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday night. The Quakers (18-4, 11-2 ODAC) have won 14 of their last 16 games and are ranked 24th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The teams played to a 35-35 halftime tie, but Henson scored eight points early in the second half, which led to a 49-41 Guilford edge. Henson, the ODAC's leading scorer, knocked down two of his five three-pointers during the spurt. The Quakers' lead grew to 10 midway through the period before Eastern Mennonite (14-8, 8-5 ODAC) rallied to within four points with 5:30 left in regulation.

Eastern Mennonite's George Johnson made one of two free throws with 2:19 remaining, which made it a 70-66 Guilford edge, but Henson's bucket at the other end restored a six-point Quakers' edge with 1:39 to play. Guilford made all eight free throws in the final minute, including six by Bonner, to seal its fifth straight win.

Henson made six of seven field goals in the second half, and shot 10-of-14 for his 10th 20-point game of the year. Bonner sank nine-of-10 free throws, all in the second half, and netted 13 of his 15 points in the final 20 minutes. Guilford shot just under 61 percent from the floor in the second half. Junior center Tyler Sanborn contributed 13 points and eight rebounds to share team-high honors with Bonner, who set a new career high for caroms in a game. George Neville chipped in 12 points on six-of-nine shooting from the floor.

Todd Phillips paced the Royals with 17 points, 14 in the second half. He also had a game-best nine boards, three assists and two steals. D.J. Hinson finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, but scored just three second-half points. Johnson scored 12 points and had four assists.

The Quakers return to action Saturday (2/14) at league-rival Lynchburg College at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Mennonite hosts Roanoke College Saturday (2/14) in a 7:00 p.m. ODAC game.
