Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (12/5/09) -- Quantrell Simmons scored a game-high 20 points and Stephen Fields added 19 points in Virginia Wesleyan College's 71-68 upset of fourth-ranked Guilford College Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
The Quakers are ranked fourth in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and had won 12 straight regular-season games dating back to last season.
Simmons and Fields combined to score the Marlins' (6-1, 1-1 ODAC) final eight points and thrwarted the Quakers' (4-1, 0-1 ODAC) comeback. Guilford's Clay Henson drilled a three-pointer after a Virginia Wesleyan turnover with 15 seconds left to pull the Quakers to within 69-68.
Following a Guilford time out, Simmons iced the win with a layup with six seconds left. Henson's three-pointer with one second remaining was off the mark.
The Marlins shot 50 percent (28-56) from the floor and made 10-of-24 three-pointers. Travis Washington and Simmons made consecutive trifectas midway through the second to open a six-point spread and break the game's seventh and final tie. Virginia Wesleyan never relinquished the lead.
Rhett Bonner paced the Quakers with 20 points, including 14 in the second half. He made all 10 free-throw attempts in the game. Henson and Tyler Sanborn both finished with 14 points.
The Quakers are back in action Wednesday (12/9) at league-rival Hampden-Sydney College at 7:00 p.m.
