Guilford Rallies Past Randolph-Macon, 71-66

GREENSBORO, N.C. (1/31/09) - Clay Henson scored 27 points and Rhett Bonner added a career-high 23 in Guilford College's 71-66 men's basketball victory over Randolph-Macon College Saturday. The Quakers (15-4, 8-2 ODAC) rallied from a seven-point second-half deficit for their 11th win in 13 outings and moved into a share with Randolph-Macon (14-5, 8-2 ODAC) atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings.  

The tightly played contest featured 18 lead changes and 12 ties and came down to the final minutes. Two Bonner free throws with 1:24 left broke the 12th and final draw and gave Guilford the lead for good. Bonner and Henson combined to make seven of eight free throws in the final 1:24, which sealed the win. Guilford held the Yellow Jackets to two field goals in the final 6:07.  

Justin Short paced three Yellow Jackets in double-figure scoring with 18 points. Jordan Brown added 14 points in 25 foul-plagued minutes. Danny Jones chipped in 13 points off the bench.  

Bonner made 10 of 11 free throws and dished out a game-high six assists. Tyler Sanborn contributed eight points, a game-best 13 rebounds and two blocks.  

Following the game, Guilford dedicated the Ragan-Brown Field House court in honor of former head men's basketball coach Jack Jensen who won 386 games and the 1973 NAIA title in 29 seasons as the Quakers' coach. In addition, the jerseys of former basketball standouts Dan Kuzma '64, Bob Kauffman '68, M.L. Carr '73 and World B. Free '76 were retired.
