(1/12/09) - - Curtis Peery scored 24 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:39 left, in Roanoke College's 80-76 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over visiting Guilford College Monday night. The Maroons (13-1, 5-0 ODAC), ranked 21st in the current D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, won their 12th straight game and ended the Quakers' six-game winning streak.
Guilford (10-3, 3-1 ODAC) rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to tie the game at 74-74 on a follow basket by freshman Brad Monroe with 2:50 remaining in regulation. Neither team scored for the next 1:11 before Peery's inside basket off a Drew Gaeng assist broke the game's fifth and final tie. Monroe's basket marked Guilford's final points until Tyler Sanborn scored with four seconds left to provide the game's final margin. Corey Poindexter and Peery both made two free throws in the final 18 seconds to seal Roanoke's win.
Peery added a team-high 10 rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot in 31 minutes. Melvin Felix scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half and knocked down a game-high four three-pointers. Poindexter scored 11 points off the bench and Parrish Walker also added 11 points. Roanoke shot better than 50 percent from the field against Guilford, which entered the game as the ODAC leader in field-goal percentage defense (.381).
Sanborn registered his seventh double-double of the season with 26 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. Teammate Clay Henson added 18 points, but made just one of nine three-point shots. Rhett Bonner added 14 points for the Quakers.
Guilford returns to action Wednesday (1/14) at 7:00 p.m. against visiting league-rival Emory & Henry College. Roanoke continues its four-game homestand Wednesday with a 7:00 ODAC game versus Bridgewater College.
