Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. (12/6/08) – Rhett Bonner led five Quakers in double-figure scoring with 17 points in Guilford College's 74-54 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon.
Guilford (5-2, 1-0 ODAC) shot over 55 percent from the floor in the first half and raced to a 40-28 halftime lead. Guilford junior center Tyler Sanborn scored 13 of his 15 points in the opening half. A 12-2 run in the first part of the half, followed by a 13-2 burst later in the period opened a 34-15 Quakers' edge with 4:49 left before halftime. Bonner started and finished the second run with three-pointers.
Quantrell Simmons'three-pointer brought the Marlins (3-5, 0-2 ODAC) within 44-35 with 17:21 left in the game, but Guilford reeled off the next eight points and Virginia Wesleyan drew no closer. The Marlins managed just over 28 percent (9-32) field-goal shooting in the second half.
Clay Henson scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for Guilford and added six rebounds plus a game-high seven assists. Sanborn added a game-best 10 rebounds and three blocks to his 15 points for his fifth double-double of the season. George Neville scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half and added seven rebounds. Martin Stephenson contributed a season-high 10 points off the bench.
Virginia Wesleyan senior Terrell Dixon led all scorers with 19 points and added four assists. Quinton McDuffie added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The contest marked a rematch of the 2008 ODAC Tournament final, which Guilford won in overtime. The Marlins lead the all-time series, 27-16, but the Quakers have won the last four meetings between the two schools.
Following a break for exams, Guilford returns to action Dec. 17 at McDaniel College.
