Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. (11/19/08) - Junior guard Rhett Bonner scored a career-high 21 points to lead Guilford College past visiting Greensboro College Wednesday night, 77-56, in nonconference men's basketball action. The Quakers' (2-0) posted their fifth win in six years over the Pride (0-3) in the first contest between the neighboring schools in Guilford's Ragan-Brown Field House since 1993.
Bonner made nine-of-11 field goals, including three of five from three-point land, to eclipse his previous scoring high by eight points. He netted 14 second-half points as Guilford's lead swelled to as many as 25 points.
Teammate Clay Henson scored nine of his 12 points in the first half as the Quakers opened a 36-23 halftime lead. Guilford made better than 53 percent of its first-half shots while limiting the Pride to 30.3 percent field-goal shooting. Guilford junior Tyler Sanborn grabbed nine of his game-high 13 rebounds and made four of his career-high five blocks in the opening period.
A Sanborn basket followed by a Bonner three-pointer opened a 41-23 Quakers' edge to start the second half. Junior guard R.J. Smith's layup with 15:05 left in regulation made it a 48-33 game, but the Pride drew no closer.
Senior George Neville added a season-high 14 points and five boards for the Quakers. Sanborn finished with eight points and rookie Gabriel Lowder added nine points and six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench. The Quakers enjoyed a 49-35 rebounding edge and converted 18 offensive caroms into 21 points.
Smith paced Greensboro with 19 points on nine-of-12 field-goal shooting. Senior guard Michael McDuffie added 10 points and senior Josh Brown had two points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Game Notes: The Quakers lead the all-time series between the cross-town rivals, 27-9, and have won eight of the last 10 meetings... the 21-point margin of victory was the series' largest since Guilford's 74-53 triumph over Greensboro in 2000... the contest marked the third consecutive game an estimated crowd of over 1,000 fans saw Guilford play in the Ragan-Brown Field House, dating back to last year... Guilford, which led all NCAA Division III teams in rebounding margin (+11.3) last season, is enjoying a 13.5 boards per game edge over its opponents through two games in 2008... Greensboro's 56 points are its fewest against Guilford since 2001.
