Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (11/16/08) - Clay Henson scored a game-high 21 points to lead visiting Guilford College past Methodist University, 81-55, Sunday afternoon in the Quakers' season opener. Teammate Tyler Sanborn added a career-high 18 points and a game-best 12 rebounds for Guilford (1-0).
Henson made six of his first nine shots and had 14 points by halftime, which helped the Quakers take a 43-29 edge at intermission. Methodist (0-2) drew no closer than 12 points in the second half as Guilford's defense forced 22 turnovers and limited the hosts to 35.7 percent shooting from the floor. Sanborn and teammate George Neville (8 points, 10 rebounds) helped the Quakers enjoy a 52-29 rebounding edge. Guilford had 19 offensive rebounds, which led to 13 points.
Rhett Bonner added 11 points for Guilford. Teammate Gabriel Lowder chipped in 10 points and Martin Stephenson added eight.
Mark Jernigan's 12 points off the bench led Methodist, which played its second game in as many days.
Guilford hosts Greensboro College Wednesday (11/19) at 7:00 in the Quakers' home opener.
