Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (01/02/08) -- Sophomore Clay Henson tied the Guilford College record with nine three-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points in the host Quakers' 82-63 men's basketball win over Averett University Wednesday night. Henson made nine-of-13 shots from beyond the arc to match the record set by Jordan Snipes '07 last February at Lynchburg College.
Guilford (5-2), ranked 12th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, has won four of its last five games.
Henson scored the Quakers' first 17 points before sophomore teammate Tyler Sanborn's tip-in with 10:12 left in the half opened a 19-12 Guilford lead. The Quakers led by as many as 15 points in the opening frame before the Cougars (5-6) pulled to within 40-37 at halftime behind four three-pointers in the final 2:13. Henson had 20 points at the break on seven-of-11 shooting, including six-of-eight from three-point land.
"I have to be honest, I've not done that much in my career," Henson said. "Today just happened to be my day and luckily my teammates did a great job of finding me."
Averett's momentum carried into the second half as the Cougars took their first lead on junior Jonathan Rumley's three-point play 2:20 into the period. Henson answered with a three-pointer on Guilford's ensuing possession, but Rumley gave Averett a 49-48 edge with 12:38 left on a tip-in.
The basket marked the Cougars' final lead of the game as Guilford senior Ben Strong answered with a jumper in the lane that triggered a decisive 32-8 run over the next 10 minutes. The Quakers held Averett to just two field goals during the run and hit four three-pointers, two by Henson. Guilford senior Eric Belkoski netted all 11 of his points and Strong scored seven of his season-low 13 points in the second half. Strong corralled a game-high 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double and added three assists and two blocks. Guilford made a season-high 13 trifectas, one game after being outscored from beyond the arc, 36-0, in a two-point loss at Shenandoah University Dec. 17.
Rumley paced the Cougars with 14 points and four assists. He also shared team-high rebounding honors with five. Senior Cory McDaniel scored 13 points and rookie Rob Wyley chipped in 12 points and five boards off the bench.
Guilford returns to action Saturday (Jan. 5) at Emory University in another nonconference game. Averett hosts Eastern Mennonite University Saturday.
