Box Score Salem, Va. (01/16/08) – AJ Dowell scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half of Roanoke College's 68-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Guilford College Wednesday night. Curtis Peery added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Maroons (10-2, 4-1 ODAC), who won their sixth straight game.
Guilford (8-4, 3-2 ODAC) lost for the second time in three outings. The Quakers are ranked 17th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.
Roanoke limited Guilford to three first-half field goals and 10.3 percent shooting from the floor to take a 28-19 halftime lead. The Quakers made 11-of-12 free throws in that time to stick around, but a late 14-2 Maroons' run opened what proved to be an insurmountable lead. Dowell had four points and two assists during the decisive spurt.
A Clay Henson three-pointer 1:35 into the second half drew the guests to within 31-25, but Roanoke answered with a 20-6 spurt over the next 10:31. Dowell tallied nine points in that time.
Roanoke's Melvin Felix scored 11 points off the bench and teammate Josh Laporte added seven points and 10 boards. The Maroons had 12 steals and forced 15 Guilford turnovers, which led to 22 points. Roanoke turned the ball over just seven times and enjoyed a 48-42 edge in rebounds.
Ben Strong led Guilford with 13 points and 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. Henson finished with 11 points, but shot just two-for-12 from the floor. Eric Belkoski scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds before fouling out. The Quakers managed just 23.6 percent shooting from the floor en route to their lowest scoring output of the season.
Guilford returns to action Saturday (1/19) at league-rival Emory & Henry College. Roanoke hosts Eastern Mennonite University Saturday night in an ODAC game.
