(4/7/07) -- Visiting Roanoke College scored the game's first five goals and never looked back in an 11-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse victory at Guilford College Saturday afternoon. The Maroons' (8-2, 3-2 ODAC) fourth win in a row ended Guilford's (6-6, 3-3 ODAC) five-match winning streak.
Roanoke's Brooks Laufman tallied two of her game-high four goals in the opening 13:20 in the Maroons' game-opening run. After two early Guilford shots hit the pipe, sophomore Jennifer Abelin finally got the hosts on the board at the 12:24 mark with the first of her three first-half goals. Laufman answered with consecutive scores that gave the guests their largest lead, 7-1, before two Abelin tallies ended the first-half scoring. Roanoke led at halftime, 7-3.
A free-position goal by Roanoke's Bianca Catta-Preta followed by sophomore Kayla Moore's third and final goal of the match restored the Maroons' lead to six (9-3) early in the second half. Guilford scored four of the final six goals, including three by rookie midfielder Carrie Ernst, but could not make a run to threaten Roanoke's lead.
Laufman and Moore were Roanoke's lone multiple-goal scorers. Sophomore Ella Wade tallied a goal and an assist for the Maroons. Roanoke's defense, which started the week ranked eighth among the NCAA Division III team defense leaders, held Guilford to its fewest goals in eight matches. The Quakers' leading scorer, junior Mary Hutchins, scored her only point with by netting game's final goal and scored nearly four point below her season average. Sophomore goalie Katlyn Scarlett, ranked fourth among the national saves percentage leaders, made six stops.
Ernst scored four points (3 goals, 1 assist) to lead Guilford's offense. Abelin matched her career-high with a season-best three goals and contributed six ground balls and four caused turnovers, both game highs. Rookie goalie Alyzza-May Callahan made five saves in the game's final 21:04.
The Quakers entertain 11th-ranked Mary Washington Sunday afternoon in a 2:00 p.m. Easter contest. Roanoke hosts Bridgewater Wednesday (4/11) in a 4:00 p.m. ODAC match.
