Lynchburg Downs Guilford in Women's Lacrosse, 16-13

Greensboro, N.C. (2/27/07) -- Sophomore attack Deana Welsch scored five goals to lead visiting Lynchburg College past Guilford College, 16-13, in the season-opening lacrosse match for both Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams.

The Hornets erased an early 5-1 deficit and used a 7-0 second-half run to claim their 23rd win over Guilford in 25 all-time meetings. Welsch started the decisive run with her third goal of the game off an assist from sophomore attack Michelle Cartier at the 18:55 mark of the second half. Senior midfielder Sarah Rahl's unassisted tally with 15:35 to play broke a 10-10 tie and gave Lynchburg the lead for good. Junior midfielder Shannon Kennedy's second goal of the game with 10:05 left capped the run and have the guests a 15-10 lead. Welsch scored twice during the spurt, as did freshman midfielder Kathryn Ollice.

Guilford sophomore Allison Brown finally ended the Hornets' domination with her third goal of the game at the 9:38 mark, but Guilford drew no closer than three goals in the final 5:56.

Ollice scored three times for Lynchburg. Senior midfielder Gina Davis netted two goals and two assists. Junior attack Nichole Locher added two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Ji-Young Eun made 12 saves and had a team-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Guilford junior Mary Hutchins scored a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Brown dented the twine three times and junior attack Caryn Washington tallied twice for the Quakers. Freshman Jessica Bolton made 10 of Guilford's 12 saves in goal. Sophomore Jennifer Abelin picked up a game-high seven ground balls and forced five turnovers.

The Quakers are back in action at Goucher Saturday (3/3) at 11:00 a.m. Lynchburg visits Averett Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
