Belkoski's Late Free Throw Lifts Guilford to Win

Box Score

Emory, Va. (2/17/07) - Eric Belkoski's (pictured) free throw with 19 seconds left provided the winning margin in Guilford's 108-107 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win Saturday afternoon. The Quakers move to 21-3 with their seventh straight win and conclude the regular season with a school-record 15-3 ODAC mark. The Wasps slip to 14-10 overall, 10-8 in the league.

Guilford is ranked 17th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and third in this week's NCAA Division III South Region Poll. The Quakers' 21 wins mark their most since 1977-78 and their 21-3 record is the best 24-game standard since 1974-75.

Guilford overcame 33 turnovers and an eight-point deficit with 5:16 left in the game for the win. The high-flying Wasps erased a 10-point halftime deficit thanks to 15 second-half three-pointers. A Kevin Viers' trifecta gave the Wasps' their largest lead, 101-93 with 5:15 remaining. The Quakers regained the lead with a 15-3 run capped by a Belkoski basket with 2:18 remaining, which gave Guilford a 105-104 edge. After the Wasps' Lance Reasbeck converted a traditional three-point play with 1:25 remaining, Ben Strong tied the game for the eighth and final time with a basket to make the score 107-107. Belkoski's winning free throw changed the lead for the eighth and final time.

Strong led all scorers and rebounders with 29 points and 12 rebounds for the 15th double-double of the year. Freshman reserve Justin Strickland added a career-high 16 points on seven-of-nine shooting from the floor. Belkoski finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Snipes tallied 12 points and Caleb Kimbrough registered a dubious double-double with 11 points and 11 turnovers against the Wasps' constant full-court pressure defense. Guilford made 63.8 percent of its shots and enjoyed a 62-43 rebounding advantage.

Robert Hudson's 18 points on six three-pointers led Emory & Henry's scorers. Reasbeck finished with 17 points and Viers netted 14 points, thanks in part to four three-pointers.

Both teams will advance to the eight-team ODAC Tournament, which begins Thursday afternoon in the Salem (Va.) Civic Center
