Box Score Greensboro, N.C. (01/21/07) - Guilford College made seven of its season-high 11 three-pointers in the second half and rallied from a 10-point deficit in Sunday's 79-69 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Eastern Mennonite. The Quakers' Jordan Snipes scored all 12 of his points in the second half and teammates Ben Strong and Thomas Burge also netted 12 second-half points.
Guilford, ranked 20th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, moves to 13-2 (7-2 ODAC) for the first time since 1974-75. Eastern Mennonite slips to 5-10 (1-8 ODAC) with its seventh straight setback. The Quakers have won 12 of the last 13 meetings with the Royals.
The guests converted 11 Guilford turnovers into 12 first-half points and grabbed a 34-28 lead at the break. Eastern Mennonite limited the Quakers to 36 percent field-goal shooting and kept Snipes, the ODAC's third-leading scorer, without a point on four shots.
The Royals opened a 10-point lead on Brad Parkes' layup with 16:57 remaining in the game. Guilford's Eric Belkoski drained a three-pointer and Burge buried two trifectas during a 13-3 Quakers' burst that tied the game at 45 with 13 minutes left.
After trading baskets, Burge broke a 54-54 tie and put the Quakers ahead for good, 57-54, with his third three-pointer of the half at the 6:56 mark. LeRoger Parrish's (Danville, Va./Tunstall) bucket with 5:02 left brought the tiring Royals to within 59-58, but Guilford put the game away with a decisive 12-0 burst over the next three minutes.
Strong led all scorers with 18 points and added a game-high eight rebounds. Burge hit for a season-high 16 points, thanks to 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. He and Snipes added five assists apiece. Rookie Clay Henson also made 3-of-4 trifectas and finished with nine points off the bench. Guilford's Justin Strickland also scored nine points off the bench. The Quakers enjoyed their best shooting day from long distance since making 11-of-17 three-pointers against Eastern Mennonite Feb. 6, 2005.
Parrish paced the Royals with 16 points and hit 4-of-9 three-point shots. Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va./Central) tallied 15 points and seven rebounds while Parkes added 15 points and six boards.
Guilford is off until Jan. 27 when the Quakers host league-rival Randolph-Macon at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Mennonite hosts Washington and Lee Wednesday (1/24) in a 7:00 p.m. ODAC game.
