Box Score 2 Bridgewater, VA (2/4/06) -- Guilford College used a 17-2 run late in the first half to open up a 21-point lead and the Quakers led by at least 10 points the rest of the game en route to a 78-65 victory Saturday over the Bridgewater College Eagles.
The Quakers led 28-22 with 6:24 remaining in the first half when a layup by
Thomas Burge started the decisive run. A 3-pointer by
Caleb Kimbrough pushed the lead to 11 before a layup by Bridgewater's Kevin Nmah cut the margin to nine points, 33-24.
Guilford scored the next 12 points, starting with a 3-pointer by Burge. A short jumper by
Eric Belkoski and another 3-pointer, this one by
Jordan Snipes pushed the margin t0 41-24. A layup by Snipes and two free throws by
Ben Strong gave the Quakers their biggest lead of the game, 45-24. Clay Michael then hit a jumper for the Eagles, making the halftime score 46-26.
A three-point play by the Eagles' Michael Oblitey pulled the hosts to within 10 points, 61-51, with 7:03 remaining, but the Quakers answered with a five-point spurt and coasted the rest of the way.
Ben Strong led a balanced Quakers attack with game-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Snipes finished with 16 points followed by Burge with 13 and Kimbrough with 10.
Michael and Josh Fox each scored 17 points for the Eagles.
The Quakers are now 10-11 overall and 8-6 in the ODAC while the Eagles fall to 8-12, 5-9 in the ODAC.
Harrisonburg, VA (2/5/06) -- Sophomore Caleb Kimbrough's three-pointer with 2:32 to go broke a 60-60 tie and Guilford College went on to record the 70-66 win over Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
Guilford (11-11, 9-6 ODAC) led for most of the first half with Eastern Mennonite (11-11, 6-9 ODAC) closing to 28-26 at the break. The second half featured six lead changes and nine ties as the teams battled for control. Kimbrough's trey gave the Quakers the lead for good. GC was able to hold on the rest of the way for the 70-66 win.
Sophomore center Ben Strong had a double-double for GC with 13 points, 11 boards, and three blocks. Kimbrough and junior guard Jordan Snipes each finished with 11 points.
Eastern Mennonite was led by sophomore guard Korey Whiting's 13 points, four boards, and five steals. Sophomore guard Brad Parkes had 12 points and six boards. Junior forward Jason Sager had 12 points, five boards, three assists, and two blocks. Junior guard JoMorrae Gordon added 10 points while senior forward E.J. Arrington had three points and a team-high 11 boards.
Guilford shot 47.4% from the floor, hit 5-of-13 (38.5%) three-pointers, and went 11-for-19 at the charity stripe. Eastern Mennonite led in rebounds 43-39, but shot just 35.5% from the floor. The Royals were also 4-of-18 (22.2%) on three-pointers and 18-of-27 (66.7%) on free throws.
Guilford returns to action Wednesday (2/8) traveling to play ODAC-rival Hampden-Sydney at 7:00 p.m.
