Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (2/11/06) - Freshman center Curtis Peery (Salem, VA/Salem) scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half to lift visiting Roanoke to an 84-73 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win at Guilford Saturday afternoon. The tightly played contest featured nine ties and 18 lead changes.
Guilford (11-13, 9-8 ODAC) took its final lead of the game on Caleb Kimbrough's (Carrboro, NC/Chapel Hill) three-pointer with 4:52 left. The sophomore's basket marked Guilford's last points of the game as Roanoke (14-10, 8-9 ODAC) closed the contest on a 12-0 run. Roanoke rookie Michael Diggs (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day) followed his own missed shot at the other end of the floor, which gave the visitors the lead for good at 74-73 with 4:33 remaining.
The Quakers missed their last eight field-goal attempts and were forced to foul down the stretch. The Maroons sealed the win by converting five-of-six free throws in the final 2:57.
Roanoke sophomore Josh LaPorte (Staunton, VA/Riverheads) shared game-high scoring honors and finished with 15 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Senior Jared Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half and added four steals. Sophomore A.J. Dowell (Salem, VA/Salem) tallied 11 points off the bench. Peery added nine boards in his 25 minutes off the bench.
Sophomore center Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) paced the Quakers with 14 points and seven boards. Freshman George Neville (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) matched his career high with 12 points off the bench and Kimbrough finished with 11 points, thanks to three-for-three shooting from three-point range.
The Quakers close the regular season Tuesday night (2/14) against visiting Washington and Lee in a 7:00 p.m. ODAC game. Roanoke hosts Emory & Henry Tuesday in its regular-season finale.
