Guilford Scores 108-102 Double Overtime Win at Methodist

Box Score

Fayetteville, N.C. (12/30/06) - Junior center Ben Strong totaled 41 points and 17 rebounds, both career highs, in Guilford College's 108-102 double-overtime win at Methodist University Saturday. With the victory, the Quakers move to 8-0, which matches the program's best start since 1967 and maintains Guilford's position as the only unbeaten college men's basketball team in North Carolina.

The host Monarchs (4-3) rallied from an 11-point deficit with 5:29 remaining and forced extra time with sophomore AB Lehmann's three-pointer at the buzzer that tied the game at 80. Guilford's Caleb Kimbrough made the first of two free throws with six seconds left in regulation, but missed the second. Senior Dragan Radmanovic grabbed the rebound and fed Lehmann, who moved down the floor and unleashed his fourth three-pointer of the half to tie the game.

Methodist held a pair of four-point leads in the first overtime, but Guilford rallied and tied the game after Jordan Snipes stole the ball and hit a game-tying jumper with 35 seconds left. Lehmann had another look on the ensuing possession, but could not convert the shot.

Guilford opened the second overtime period with a 12-0 run that included a Kimbrough three-pointer, five points from Strong and four by Thomas Burge. Radmanovic ended Guilford's run with a three-pointer at the 1:30 mark of the second overtime, but the Quakers sealed the win by making five-of-six free throws in the final 50 seconds.

Kimbrough finished with a career-high 19 points and added seven assists. Eric Belkoski also had a career night thanks to 17 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Guilford made nine-of-13 shots (69.2%) in overtime. Strong, who scored 11 overtime points, made 17-of-30 field goals and had eight of his 17 rebounds at the offensive end.

Radmanovic's 27 points led four Monarchs in double-figure scoring. He and Lehmann each made four three-pointers. Lehmann finished with 19 points, 14 in the second half, and dished out a game-best eight assists. Freshman Adrian Bascom made all eight free throws and tallied 16 points.

Guilford meets unbeaten Averett (9-0) Tuesday night (1/2) at 7:00 p.m. in Danville, Va. The Cougars are ranked 12th in this week's D3hoops.com National Poll and off to their best start in school history. Methodist hosts defending NCAA Division III champion Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday (1/3) at 3:00 p.m.
