Box Score Salem, Va. (11/19/06) -- Ben Strong matched his career high with 30 points in Guilford's 91-78 men's basketball win over the University of the South (Sewanee) Sunday. The contest marked the Quakers' (2-0) second and final game in the Jimmy V Classic hosted by Roanoke College.
Strong, a 6-11 junior center, made 10-of-13 field goals and 10-of-11 free throws to match his previous scoring mark set in January against Emory & Henry. He joined teammate Jordan Snipes as Guilford's representatives on the all-tournament team.
Strong had 19 points and eight rebounds by halftime, which helped the Quakers (2-0) open a 44-33 lead. Guilford made over 57 percent of its shots and overcame 11 turnovers in the first half. Strong had three dunks in the opening 4:40 of the second half as the Quakers never let the Tigers (0-2) threaten. Guilford built a 25-point lead, which the Tigers' reserves whittled down to 13 against their Quakers' counterparts.
Snipes finished with 13 points and six boards in 18 minutes. Guilford rookie Justin Strickland added 10 points and a game-high five assists off the bench. Guilford enjoyed a 44-24 advantage in rebounds.
Joey Garcia led the Tigers with 20 points. Gary Grizzle added 12 points.
Guilford returns to action Nov. 29 against cross-town rival Greensboro College. The contest will be played in the Greensboro Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
