Box Score GREENSBORO, NC (1/15/06) -- Ben Strong scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half to help Guilford past visiting Bridgewater, 72-68, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action Sunday.
Guilford won for the third straight game and improves to 6-8 (5-3 ODAC). The Eagles fall to 5-10 (2-7 ODAC).
Bridgewater trimmed a 15-point second-half deficit to two with 59 seconds left. Clay Michael's layup capped a 20-7 Bridgewater run. Michael's hoop made it a 68-66 game before Strong answered at the other end for Guilford with 25 seconds left.
Michael scoffed again 18 seconds later and Bridgewater quickly called time out, trailing 70-68. Michael fouled Caleb Kimbrough on the inbounds pass and following another Eagles' timeout, Kimbrough knocked down two free throws to ice the victory.
Michael led all scorers with 19 points, which included 16 in the second half. Josh Maupin tallied 16 points for the Eagles, thanks to four-of-six three-point shooting. Michael Oblitey added 10 points and three assists off the bench.
Thomas Burge was the only other Guilford student-athlete in double-figure scoring with 10 points. George Neville netted eight points off the bench and rookie Barry Wells scored four points and grabbed a game- and career-high 11 rebounds. The Quakers enjoyed a 34-25 edge on the boards and withstood the Eagles' 51.9 percent field-goal shooting.
Guilford hosts Emory & Henry Wednesday (1/18) in a rematch of the Nov. 30 contest that saw the Quakers pull out a 147-136 triumph in Emory, VA. The Eagles visit Washington and Lee Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
