Lynchburg Outlasts Guilford, 19-13, in ODAC Women's Lacrosse

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (3/24/05) -- Rachel Bauer and Shannon Smith both scored three second-half goals and lifted Lynchburg to a 19-13 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse win at Guilford Thursday. The pair combined for six of the Hornets' (5-1, 1-1 ODAC) 10 goals in the final 26:53.

The teams traded tallies for the first 10 minutes before a 5-0 Hornets' spurt gave the guests an 8-4 edge with 10:52 left before halftime. The Quakers (3-3, 1-1 ODAC) answered with three straight goals, including Jordan Clodfelter's unassisted tally at the 1:48 mark, which pulled Guilford to within 8-7. Bauer scored the first of her team-high four scores 31 seconds later for a 9-7 Lynchburg halftime lead.

Guilford's Caryn Stone opened the second-half scoring with consecutive scores and tie the match at 9-9 with 27:05 left. The Hornets' Kelly Vonadore quenched the Quakers' momentum by picking up the ensuing draw and streaking through Guilford's defense for an unassisted goal 12 seconds. Mary Hutchins answered for the Quakers, but Cressita Bowman triggered a 9-2 Lynchburg run over the next 19 minutes with her third goal of the game. Guilford, which played with only one substitute, faded down the stretch while the Hornets took advantage of its deeper bench to outscore the hosts, 10-4, in the final 26:53.

Bauer (4 goals, 1 assist) and Nichole Locher (3 goals, 2 assists) paced Lynchburg with five points apiece. Eight different student-athletes tallied for the Hornets, including Smith and Bowman, who both netted three goals. Ji-Young Eun played well in goal, especially in the first half when she made nine of her game-high 11 saves.
Stone, who entered the match with no goals in five contests, erupted for a career- and match-high five scores. Hutchins finished with two goals and four assists. Clodfelter and Breed contributed two goals apiece. Guilford's Emily Mayer had a match-best seven ground balls.
