Balanced Effort Lifts Guilford to First ODAC Women's Lacrosse Win

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (3/19/05) -- Freshman Mary Hutchins scored three goals and three assists in Guilford's 12-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse win over visiting Bridgewater Saturday on Haworth Field. Hutchins was one of seven goal scorers for the Quakers (3-2, 1-1 ODAC), who snapped a two-match losing skid.

The Quakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Michelle Miller got the Eagles (0-5, 1-1 ODAC) on the board with her first of two goals on the day at the 12:40 mark. The teams traded tallies before Bridgewater's Jenna Cumberland and Emily Bauer scored back-to-back goals 50 seconds apart to make it a 4-3 game with 2:10 left in the half. Hutchins answered with her first goal of the day and set up Billie Pellerito's second goal with 24 seconds left for a 6-3 Guilford lead at intermission.

Guilford struck for three goals at the start of the half before Lauren Smith and Nikki Lilly scored to make it a 9-5 contest with 10:13 left. The Eagles drew no closer as Guilford scored three of the match's last four goals.

Bridgewater outshot the Quakers, 31-23, but Guilford goalie Devorah Litt played effectively in goal with a season-high 14 saves (10 in the first half) and eight ground balls. Pellerito also had eight pickups for the Quakers. She joined Katie Gilligan and Jordan Clodfelter as two-goal scorers.

Miller's two tallies led the Eagles as Smith, Bridgewater's leading scorer entering the game, was held to one second-half goal. Charlotte Beach made five saves in goal.

Guilford's March 20 match with visiting Ferrum has been postponed until March 29. The Quakers return to action Wednesday (3/23) against visiting Lynchburg in a 4:00 p.m. ODAC match. Bridgewater hosts Wittenberg Sunday (3/20) in a 2:00 p.m. nonconference contest.
