Box Score Avery Lovejoy matched her career high with five goals and Kate Lester added three scores as visiting Washington and Lee defeated Guilford, 13-4, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse action. The game was halted with 9:43 left in the game due to unplayable field and weather conditions. Most of the contest was played in a steady, windblown drizzle on a rain-soaked field with temperatures falling into the low 30s.
The Generals (5-1, 2-0 ODAC) are ranked 18th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III national poll and were picked first in the ODAC's preseason coaches' poll.
Lester scored the game's first three goals and sparked Washington and Lee to an 8-1 lead before Guilford tallied three straight scores in the last third of the opening period to make it an 8-4 game. Mallory Lobisser scored with 1:27 left in the half for an 9-4 Generals' edge at the break.
Kelly Evans opened the second-half scoring for Washington and Lee with her second goal of the game 2:36 into the half. Lovejoy followed 11 seconds later with her third goal of the game and she rounded out the scoring with unassisted tallies at 17:01 and 14:22.
The Generals controlled play for most of the game and enjoyed a 35-9 advantage in shots. The poor playing conditions contributed to a combined 56 turnovers between the two teams, 31 by the Quakers.
Jordan Clodfelter led Guilford with two goals in her first game back from injury. Mary Hutchins contributed a goal and an assist.
Guilford continues its four-game home stand Saturday against ODAC rival Bridgewater at 1:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center. Washington and Lee visit Mary Washington Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
