Box Score Guilford College men's basketball student-athlete Jordan Snipes enjoyed the thrill of a lifetime Jan. 31 when he connected on an 85-foot, 5-inch buzzer-beating shot to lift the Quakers to a 91-89 overtime win at league-rival Randolph-Macon.
Bill Voth of WRIC-TV captured the shot on videotape and it received national exposure via ESPN, CNN and numerous local affiliates.
The widespread publicity provided the pride of Siler City, NC, more than his 15 minutes of fame. A highlight of Snipes' post-shot media appearances was his Feb. 4 visit to the studios of Greensboro's WOZN, 98.7 The Zone.
When Snipes filled the nets for a career-high 34 points on nine-of-12 field-goal shooting, including six-of-seven shooting from three-point range, he was surely in the zone. When you consider his buzzer-beater and 10 straight free throws, he was really in the zone. However, it wasn't until he visited with morning hosts Jeff Wicker and AJ that Snipes was truly in The Zone!
During his visit, Snipes chatted with Jeff and AJ about the winning shot and the re-enactment of the shot he made the following night during Greg Kerr's live sportscast on WFMY TV in Greensboro. He also met Tim Bob and learned of a golfing mishap Jordan's girlfriend has with Tim Bob some seven or eight years ago.
Jeff and AJ put Snipes to the test before he left the studios and challenged him to make 16 baskets from eight feet away with balled up pieces of paper thrown into a trash can. The paper proved tougher than it looked early in the morning as Snipes made 10-of-16 shots before a live radio audience.
Three lucky callers received free tickets to Guilford's men's basketball games Feb. 5 and Feb. 6, courtesy of Guilford Athletics and 98.7 The Zone.
