Box Score Junior guard Gary Kerns scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead visiting Emory & Henry to an 80-73 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Guilford in the league lid-lifter for both teams.
Kerns made a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to send the Wasps into the locker room with a 35-34 lead after a back-and-forth opening period. He added four points during Emory & Henry's 9-0 run that opened the second half and gave the guests a 10-point edge. Two Korey Townsend free throws extended the Wasps' lead to 60-45 with 8:02 remaining in the game. The Quakers rallied with a 16-2 run that included three straight three-pointers and pulled to within 62-61 on senior Ashford Gray's trifecta with 4:56 remaining.
The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes, with Kerns scoring three of Emory & Henry's last five field goals, plus two free throws in the final 4:43. After Guilford's Kerry Atkinson missed a potentially game-tying three-pointer with 58 seconds left, he fouled Lance Reasbeck, who made two free throws for a 76-71 Wasps' lead. Townsend made four of six free throws in the final 33 seconds, while Guilford could not score a basket until junior Patrick Stephenson's layup with four seconds left.
Kerns added a game-high nine rebounds for the Wasps. Townsend finished with 13 points, seven boards and three assists. Reasbeck and Davon Jones scored 10 points apiece.
Sophomore Thomas Burge paced the Quakers with 18 points and a game-high six assists off the bench. Junior center Genaro Lawhorn and freshman center Ben Strong added 14 points apiece.
Guilford returns to action Saturday at league-rival Lynchburg at 3:00 p.m. The Wasps host Hampden-Sydney Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in an ODAC matchup.
