Box Score Senior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) led four players in double-figure scoring with 23 points in host Guilford's 102-79 men's basketball win over Marymount Monday night. Junior Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) added 20 points in the Quakers' fourth straight victory and the Saints' seventh loss in eight games.
The teams raced out to a 21-21 tie nine minutes into the game, but Guilford pulled away thanks to a 10-0 run that included six straight points off the bench from sophomore forward Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy). The Saints rallied to within one point with a 10-2 run of their own, but Guilford reeled off nine unanswered points in the half's final 55 seconds for a 53-43 halftime lead.
Marymount made just 12 of 41 (29.3%) field goals in the second half, while Guilford enjoyed its second-best shooting game of the year. The Quakers gradually opened a 20-point lead and never allowed Marymount closer than 69-56 in the final 14 minutes. All 11 Guilford players in uniform scored.
Clarke led Guilford's scorers for the sixth time this season and hit a career-high five three pointers, the most a Guilford player this year. Martin made all three of his three-point attempts as the Quakers connected on a season-high 14 of 28 three-pointers. Lawhorn finished with 17 points and a career-high 11 boards off the bench and senior Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Greenville) added 11 points in 13 foul-plagued minutes. Senior Devon Clyburn (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) scored eight points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
Marymount senior Carlton Phelps (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) led all scorers with a season-best 30 points, his third 30-point game of the year, and had a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Ed Carrai (Newville, OH/Big Spring) added 11 points and four boards. Junior Kip McCoy (Washington, DC/Coolidge) finished with 10 points and three blocks.
Guilford hosts nationally ranked Randolph-Macon Saturday (1/10) at 3:00 p.m. in the second of a four-game home stand. Marymount hosts Lycoming Thursday (1/8) at 7:00 p.m.
