Box Score Marques Fitch (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) scored a game-high 22 points to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 74-66 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over host Guilford Sunday afternoon. The Marlins (11-1, 5-1 ODAC), ranked 19th in this week's D3Hoops.com Division III national poll, bounced back from their first loss of the season, suffered Saturday at Emory & Henry.
Fitch tallied 13 of his points in the first half, which helped the visitors to a 37-33 halftime lead. The sophomore guard hassled Guilford ball-handlers and had three of his team's 12 steals. Guilford (6-7, 2-4 ODAC) turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 25 Virginia Wesleyan points.
A Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) basket less than two minutes into the second half pulled Guilford to within one, 38-37. The Marlins used a 10-2 run over the next three minutes and gradually opened a 10-point lead. Two David Doino (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) free throws gave Virginia Wesleyan a 66-54 edge with 5:19 remaining, the Marlins' largest lead of the game. Guilford drew no closer than six points for the rest of the game.
Doino finished with 15 points, 10 in the second half, for Virginia Wesleyan. Peter Warren (Winchester, VA/Handley) (11 points) and Brandon Adair (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) (10 points) also scored in double-figures for the Marlins. Doino shared game-high rebounding honors with nine caroms, while Warren and Adair added eight boards apiece. Justin Blazer (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) had eight points, three steals and a game-best seven assists.
Guilford sophomore Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, NC/Oak Ridge Military Academy) shared game-high scoring honors with a career-high 22 points off the bench. He made all nine shots from the floor and added five rebounds in 14 minutes. Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) scored 11 points and Swindell finished with nine points and nine boards for the Quakers.
Guilford concludes a four-game homestand Wednesday night (1/14) versus ODAC-rival Roanoke at 7:00 pm. The Marlins host Bridgewater Wednesday (1/14) at 7:00 pm in an ODAC tilt.
