Box Score Roanoke advanced to the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's lacrosse tournament with a 20-6 win over Guilford in the quarterfinal round Wednesday. The Maroons improve to 10-5 on the season and advance to the semifinals for the 21st consecutive season. Guilford, the sixth seed in the ODAC tournament, sees it's season come to an end with a 5-12 overall mark.
Julie VanDerGhinst (Boca Raton, FL/St. Edward's) and Carrie Smith (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) gave the Maroons a 2-0 lead with goals in the first five minutes. Guilford's Sarah Routhier (North Yarmouth, ME/Greely), the team's leading scorer, cut the Roanoke lead to one with her 41st goal of the season. Emily Hearn (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) pushed the Roanoke lead back to three, that with 24:53 to play in the first half, with the second of three straight RC free position goals. Routhier again cut the lead to one, but the Maroons would score the next six goals of the half. The Maroons got goals from five different Maroons during the run, two from Smith and also scores from Laura Esty (Great Valley, PA/Malvern) and Meaghan Cromwell (Alexandria, VA/Mt. Vernon).
The Quakers got a goal from Lauren Goodwin (Newburyport,MA/Newburyport) with 1:16 to play to cut the Roanoke lead to 9-3, but the Maroons carried a 10-3 lead into the break after senior defender Katy Shaver (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) scored with 10 seconds left on another free position goal. Dara Lundregan (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) scored the first two goals of the second half to give Roanoke a 12-3 lead. Hearn and Smith each scored again before Guilford's Routhier netted her third goal of the game, that with 16:20 to go. Sarah Garrison (Fairhaven, NJ/Rumson Fairhaven), Beth Wheeler (Wolfeboro, NH/Kingswood), and Steph Calabrese (Darien, CT/Darien) all added second half goals for RC. Katie Rice (Worton, MD/Kent County) scored the final two goals for the Quakers, the final coming with 2:12 to play in regulation.
In addition to her first half goal, Shaver added five caused turnovers and seven groundballs for the Maroons defense', which forced 16 Guilford turnovers. Garrison and Smith each added three draw controls for the Maroons, who also got two caused turnovers from Nikki Whitmore (Reston, VA/Herndon) and three groundballs from Carolyn Maurer (Camilius, NY/West Genessee).
The Maroons take on Randolph-Macon at 3:00pm Saturday (4/26) afternoon in the ODAC semifinals. The Maroons and Yellow Jackets meet in Lexington, VA, and on the campus of Washington and Lee. Randolph-Macon defeated Bridgewater, 17-1, Wednesday.
