Box Score Greensboro, NC (02/12/03) -- Sophomore Ian McClure (Louisville, KY/DuPont Manual) scored 19 points and senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, VA/Landon) added 18 in Washington and Lee's 72-57 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win at Guilford Wednesday. The Generals shot a season-high 56 percent from the floor in their second straight victory, including 62.5 percent (15-24) in the second half.
Washington and Lee (7-15, 4-12 ODAC) has won back-to-back contests after a nine-game losing skid. Guilford's loss snapped the Quakers' (10-13, 6-10 ODAC) three-game winning streak in the season series and marked their fourth setback in five outings.
Rookie David Will (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and helped the visitors build an eight-point halftime lead. He scored six points during a 16-4 Generals' run early in the period that opened a 10-point Washington and Lee lead. Guilford battled back and tied the game at 20-20 on two Eric Williams' (Greenville, SC/Southside) free throws with 5:48 left in the half, but the Generals answered with a 14-6 spurt to end the half with a 34-26 advantage.
Sophomore guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) opened the second-half with a three-pointer for a 37-26 Washington and Lee edge. Guilford never drew closer than nine points for the rest of the game as the Generals made 15 of 24 field goals, including four-of-six three-pointers, in the final 20 minutes. Hettermann tallied 14 of his 18 points in the second half.
Stuart finished with 14 points for the Generals and junior forward Hamil Jones (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) added four points, a game-high eight boards, four assists and two blocks. McClure, who had five rebounds, made five of seven three-pointers and moved into third place on the Generals' season trifectas list with 54. He needs 10 three-pointers to break Bryan Watkins' 1992 school record of 63. Washington and Lee enjoyed a 35-23 rebounding advantage.
Williams led Guilford with 15 points off the bench. The Quakers shot 35.2 percent for the game, including 28.1 percent (9-32) in the first half.
Guilford entertains Roanoke Saturday (2/15) at 7:00 pm. The Generals host Eastern Mennonite Saturday (2/15) at 7:00 pm.
