Guilford Downs Virigina Wesleyan For Fourth Straight ODAC Men's Basketball Win

Greensboro, NC (02/01/03) -- Junior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) netted a game-high 18 points and sophomore guard Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) tallied all 13 of his points in the second half of Guilford's 72-60 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Virginia Wesleyan Saturday.

The Quakers' fifth victory in six games evened their record at 9-9 and improved their ODAC mark to 5-6. The victory extended Guilford's league winning streak to four and its home winning streak to five. After a 12-game winning streak, Virginia Wesleyan (13-6, 8-4 ODAC) has dropped five of its last six contests.

After an entertaining first half that featured 14 of the game's 17 lead changes, Guilford used a 10-2 run midway through the second half to open a 61-50 lead with 7:47 remaining in the game. Martin capped the spurt with back-to-back buckets and made four free throws down the stretch. Virginia Wesleyan never drew closer than nine points in the second half as the Marlins' shots stopped falling. After shooting just under 61 percent (14-23) in the first half, Virginia Wesleyan managed just 34.5 percent shooting (10-19) in the second half, including two-of-10 shooting from three-point range.

Turnovers played a difference in the contest as Guilford committed a season-low 12 miscues, five in the second half. The Marlins turned the ball over 17 times, which led to 24 Quakers' points.

Guilford junior Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) continued his solid play with 10 points and two assists off the bench. Martin added a game-high five assists and five rebounds to his 13 points. Sophomore center Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page) contributed nine points, a team-high seven boards and two blocks for Guilford.

Virginia Wesleyan sophomore forward Peter Warren (Winchester, VA/Hadley) notched a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He had 12 points by halftime, thanks to three three-point goals in four attempts. Senior forward Ryan Kahle (Falls Church, VA/McLean) added 13 points and senior Louis Park (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) scored 10 for the Marlins.

Guilford gears up for consecutive home contests against nationally ranked league rivals Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney this Monday and Wednesday, respectively. Hampden-Sydney started the day ranked second in the country and was one of two unbeaten men's basketball teams in NCAA Division III. Virginia Wesleyan plays its third straight road game Sunday afternoon (2/2) at Emory & Henry.
