CLARKE LIFTS GUILFORD PAST EMORY & HENRY, 90-81, FOR FIRST ODAC WIN

Box Score

Guilford's Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) scored a season-high 27 points and had a career-best seven steals in the Quakers' 90-81 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Emory & Henry Saturday. The win snapped Guilford's (3-5, 1-2 ODAC) two-game losing skid and marked the team's first ODAC and home win under first-year head coach Tom Palombo.

Senior guard Justin Call (Ronda, NC/East Wilkes) scored 17 of his game-high 30 points in the first 12 minutes of the game, which helped the Wasps (3-4, 1-2 ODAC) open a 28-17 first-half lead. Guilford shut down the ODAC's scoring leader for the rest of the half closed the period on a 28-11 run to take a 45-39 halftime edge. Sophomore James Parker (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) sparked the spurt off the bench with seven of his career-high 13 points, including a three-pointer with 13 seconds left that gave Guilford its largest lead of the half.

Emory & Henry stayed close in the second half and held the lead twice. Korey Townsend's (South Boston, VA/Halifax County) traditional three-point play with 8:20 left gave the Wasps a 67-66 edge, their last of the game. Guilford answered with an 8-0 run that opened a 74-67 lead with 5:44 remaining. Emory & Henry drew no closer than three points the rest of the way. Clarke netted 21 of his 27 points in the second half.

Guilford senior Thomas Swindell (High Point, NC/Southwest Guilford) matched his season high with 17 points and added eight rebounds. Senior Devon Clyburn (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg), normally a shooting guard, played well at point guard in the absence of injured starter Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville). Clyburn totalled 12 points (10 in the first half), three assists, six rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.

Junior Brandon Stanley (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds for Emory & Henry. Sophomore Will Schwartzstein (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) also notched a double-double with 10 points and a game-best 12 boards off the bench. Junior point guard Ben Fisher (Radford, VA/Radford) had seven points and 15 assists, two shy of the ODAC record, but turned the ball over nine times.

Guilford is off for two weeks before hosting Hiram on New Year's Eve at 3:00 pm.
