Box Score Greensboro, NC (01/04/03) -- Sophomore forward Ryan Pehanick (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) scored 22 of his game- and career-high 33 points in the second half as visiting Lynchburg rallied for a 90-81 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Guilford Saturday.
The loss ends Guilford's (2-5, 0-3 ODAC) home winning streak at nine games and snaps the Quakers' win streak over Lynchburg (3-6, 1-2 ODAC) at four. The Hornets ended a 13-game ODAC losing skid with the first league victory of rookie head coach Andrew Miller's career.
Guilford led by 22 points at halftime, but Pehanick scored 16 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half to get Lynchburg back into the game. Sophomore guard Todd Crown's (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) jumper with 5:44 left capped a 19-4 Hornets' run and gave Lynchburg its first lead (68-67). Guilford regained a 69-68 edge with 4:38 left on a layup by Robert Spence (Apex, NC/Southwest Raleigh). Spence's hoop marked the Quakers' lone field goal in a six-and-a-half minute span late in the second half.
Freshman forward Reed Fairchild's (Spotsylvania, VA/Massaponax) basket gave the Hornets the lead for good and started a 9-0 run that opened a 77-69 lead with 2:04 left. The Quakers drew no closer than five points in the last two minutes as the Hornets broke Guilford's press and made nine of 11 free throws in the final 1:21.
Junior forward Josh Cobbs (Danville, VA/Tunstall) scored 16 points five rebounds and five assists for Lynchburg. Fairchild (Spotsylvania, VA/Massaponax) finished with 13 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Sophomore forward Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page) led Guilford with a career-high 19 points off the bench in his first game since joining the Quakers from Division I UNC Wilmington earlier this week. Junior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Guilford) added 13 points, 11 in the first half. Junior forward Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) scored 10 points and had four rebounds after missing Guilford's first six games with an injury.
Guilford returns to action Wednesday at league-rival Washington and Lee at 7:00. The contest was rescheduled from December 5 due to ice. Lynchburg hosts Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC game Wednesday.
