Box Score Greensboro, NC (01/19/03) -- Sophomore forward Brandon Clifford's (Greensboro, NC/Page) two free throws with one minute left broke a 62-62 tie and lifted Guilford past visiting Bridgewater, 67-62, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action Sunday. Clifford scored 10 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and led Guilford's scorers for the sixth time in seven games since joining the team from Division I UNC Wilmington earlier this month.
The Quakers (6-8, 3-6 ODAC) rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit for their second win in as many days. Rookie Richard Mallalieu's (Luray, VA/Luray) traditional three-point play with 12:49 left gave the visiting Eagles (9-5, 3-4 ODAC) the game's largest lead, 51-39. Guilford junior Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) answered with a three-pointer and triggered a 17-5 run capped by junior Robert Spence's (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) runner in the lane with 5:31 left to tie the game at 56-56. Bridgewater made one of seven field goals and committed six of its 19 turnovers during Guilford's run.
The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes before Guilford junior Ron Bradford (Eden, NC/Greensboro Day) drained his third three-pointer of the game and tied the score for the ninth and final time at 62-62. Following an Eagles' timeout, Clifford rebounded a Jeff Schwalm (Sterling, VA/Parkview) miss and was fouled on the play, leading to Guilford's go-ahead free throws.
Clifford rebounded another Schwalm miss on the Eagles' ensuing possession, but Guilford failed to completely capitalize as junior Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) missed two free throws with 36 seconds left. Bradford retrieved Connor's second miss and was fouled with 17 seconds remaining. He made one of two free throws for a 65-62 Guilford lead. Junior Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) sealed the win when he blocked sophomore Ashby Tarkington's (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) three-point attempt with eight seconds left and made two free throws with four ticks remaining.
Bridgewater sophomore Ricky Easterling (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk) scored a game-high 22 points, 13 in the second half, and added four assists. Tarkington scored seven points and led the Eagles with seven boards. Junior forward Ryan Lambert (Petersburg, WV/Petersburg) also netted seven for Bridgewater.
The Quakers converted 19 Bridgewater turnovers into 25 points and committed a season-low 14 miscues, which led to 11 Eagles' points. Bradford joined Clifford in double-digit scoring with 10 points. Clarke had a solid game with nine points, a game-high eight boards, two assists, three blocks and three steals.
Guilford steps away from ODAC play Wednesday (01/22) to visit cross-town Division I rival UNC Greensboro at 7:00 pm. Bridgewater visits Roanoke Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
