Box Score

Greensboro, NC (01/18/03) -- Junior Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) scored seven points during a decisive 12-0 Guilford run late in the second half in the Quakers' 80-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over Eastern Mennonite Saturday. Clarke finished with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds.

The win snaps Guilford's (5-8, 2-6 ODAC) three-game losing streak and extends the Royals' (2-12, 0-7 ODAC) losing slide to seven. The Quakers have won three straight from Eastern Mennonite and six of the last seven meetings between the teams.

The Quakers led by as many as 19 points in the first half and held a nine-point edge early in the second period before Eastern Mennonite rallied. Freshman forward Bryan Williams (Stafford, VA/Evangel Christian) scored seven points and E.J. Arrington (Staunton, VA/Robert E. Lee) added six during a 23-11 Royals' run that turned a seven-point deficit into a 68-63 lead with 5:47 to play.

Guilford's Clarke answered with a basket and sophomore guard Clarence Martin (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville) drained his third three-pointer of the half to force the game's sixth and final tie, 68-68. He followed with two free throws at the 4:17 mark to give Guilford the lead for good, 70-68. Clarke concluded the decisive 12-0 burst with back-to-back buckets, including a three-pointer, that gave the Quakers a 75-68 lead with 2:51 left.

Freshman forward Earl Dyer's (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) three-pointer drew Eastern Mennonite to within 75-72 with 1:20 left, but marked the Royals' last points of the game. Guilford made five of nine free throws in the final 1:02 to provide the final margin.

Arrington led all scorers with 21 points, including 12 in the second half, before fouling out. He also led Eastern Mennonite with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Williams finished with 16 points and Dyer added 10 points and four boards.

Guilford's Martin scored all 11 of his season-high points in the second half thanks to three-of-five shooting from three-point range. Junior forward Eric Williams (Greenville, SC/Southside) netted 11 points off the bench and sophomore Greg McDowell (Rutherfordton, NC/R-S Central) tallied a career-best 10 points, all in the first half. Junior forward Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) scored nine points and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page), Guilford's leading scorer, suffered through a three-of-13 shooting performance, but managed a career-high 10 rebounds and six points.

The teams continue ODAC play Sunday (01/18) at 3:00 pm when Guilford entertains Bridgewater at 3:00 pm and Eastern Mennonite visits Emory & Henry.
