Randolph-Macon Men's Basketball Team Finishes Off Guilford, 80-61

ASHLAND, VA (01/11/03) - Junior guard Ryan  Stein (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) scored a season-and team-high 19 points , thanks to four pointers in third-ranked Randolph-Macon's 80-61 Old Dominion  Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball win over visiting Guilford Saturday.  Senior forward Jared Mills (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) scored 18 points, as Randolph-Macon improved to 11-0 overall, 5-0 in the conference. This continues to be the best start for the program since 1974-75, when the Yellow Jackets were 15-0 to open the campaign. The Quakers fell to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the ODAC.

Randolph-Macon led the entire contest, and dominated for much of the first half. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 17 points twice in the first 10:00 of the period.  Guilford trailed 28-11 with 10:48 left before halftime, but used a 20-9 run to pull within 37-31 at the break.

The Quakers continued to battle in the second half, cutting the lead to three points several times. Randolph-Macon held a 56-53 edge with 10:43 remaining in the game, but shut the door down the stretch with a game-ending 24-8 run.

Junior forward Kurt Bergmann (Fallsington, PA/Pennsbury) added 13 points, including 3-for-4 three-point shooting, plus three assists, two steals, and a team-high seven rebounds for Randolph-Macon. Senior guard Tim Smith (Jacksonville,  FL/Old Mill [MD]) contributed with nine points, four assists, and two steals. Freshman forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) and junior forward Jim Silcox (Newton,  NC/Newton-Conover) each scored eight points.

Sophomore forward Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, NC/Page) led Guilford with a career- and game-high 22 points. Junior forward Jevon Clarke (Apex, NC/Southeast Raleigh) added nine points, a career- and game-high 12 board, and a team-high four assists. Junior forward Josh Connor (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) contributed seven points for the Quakers.
