Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (12/07/02) -Hampden-Sydney's Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) made a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining in the contest to lift the sixth-ranked Tigers to a 62-61 victory over Guilford in Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball action Saturday in H-SC's Fleet Gymnasium. The win moves the Tigers to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC, while the Quakers are now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Guilford held a 61-58 lead with 2:47 to play before Lane Brooks (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) scored on a layup for his 24th and 25th points of the game to cut the Quaker lead to one, 61-60. As the two teams each missed a pair of baskets over the next 2:43, Randall was fouled going for a rebound to set up the crucial free throw opportunities.
The career 80 percent foul shooter knocked down both freebies to put H-SC in the lead for good, 62-61, as Guilford was unable to convert on a last-second shot by Jevon Clarke. The win was the third for the Tigers over Guilford in the last year with a margin of victory under three points.
Randall finished the game with 13 points, while the offensive star was Brooks with 25 points and 15 rebounds (including nine offensive) to lead all players. Marcus Gregory (Meherrin, VA/Prince Edward) served up eight assists to give him 17 in his last two games, while Jason Holman (Amelia, VA/Amelia Co.) narrowly missed out on his second double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Guilford was led by Genaro Lawhorn with a career-high 13 points, while Clarke and Clarence Martin each scored 11. Poor shooting plagued the Tigers as the team shot season lows in all categories, converting 36 percent (25-70) from the floor, 61 percent (11-18) from the line, while making just one-of-16 three-point attempts.
Guilford shot 45 percent (25-55) for the game and knocked down 50 percent (6-12) of its three-point attempts while make 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. The Tigers won the rebounding edge, 44-36, and forced 24 Quaker turnovers in the victory.
