Greensboro Men Rally Past Guilford, 69-65

Greensboro, NC (12/02/02) - Terris Sifford scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and grabbed nine rebounds as Greensboro's men's basketball rallied past Guilford, 69-65, Monday night in the Greensboro Coliseum. The Pride's (2-2) second win in as many days ended Guilford's (1-2) three-game winning streak in the season series.

Two Bennie Bryant free throws with 1:19 left gave Greensboro a 63-62 lead, its first since the 5:28 mark of the first half. Guilford went cold down the stretch as the Pride scored 14 of the game's 17 points over the final 4:27.  An inconsequential three-pointer by Guilford's Clarence Martin with one second left marked Guilford's only points during the final 4:27.

Sifford and Trey Williams combined for 13 of Greensboro's 15 points during a six-minute stretch midway through the second half when Greensboro pulled to within 55-52 with 7:37 remaining. Guilford's Genaro Lawhorn tallied seven straight points as the Quakers upped their lead to 62-55 with 4:27 remaining before the Greensboro comeback.

Williams netted 13 of his 15 points in the second half and led the Pride with five assists. Daron Williams hit three three-points and finished with 16 points for Greensboro.

Guilford rallied from an early 19-5 deficit with a 26-3 run in the first half and held a 34-25 halftime lead. Jevon Clarke, who scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the opening half, led Guilford with eight rebounds and added five assists. Robert Spence knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Eric Williams added 10 points and five boards before fouling out late in the game.

The victory was the first over Guilford for first-year Greensboro coach Lynn Ramage. The loss was the first for Guilford head coach Butch Estes in four meetings with the Quakers' cross-town rival.
